Flash flood causes extensive damage to crops, roads; local MLA ‘unconcerned’

Correspondent

RUKSIN, Sept 13: Incessant rain for the last two days has badly affected crop field and water pipelines in Ruksin and Bilat circles under Pasighat-West area. Flood also totally snapped communication along Mirem-Mikong-Jonai road.

Surging water of Peneng river between Mikong and Mirem largely eroded its right bank, washed away the bridge wall and boulder spars at its upstream. In a similar manner, overflowing water of Niglok river washed away the bridge wall and boulder spars at its right end and snapped the road link.

The president of Ruksin Area Youth Front Tadi Jonnom along the PWD Junior Engineer of Ruksin, Harinder Singh accompanied by media persons today visited the erosion hit sites and has taken stock of the situation and reported it to the Executive Engineer of the department concerned for early restorative work.

On the other hand, the log bridge over Ngorlung river near Ruksin, which was washed away on August 30 last has not been reconstructed yet causing total disruption of communication of the villagers to Ruksin town.

Some leading citizens of the area have lamented Pasighat-West MLA Tangor Tapak’s alleged indifferent attitude towards the problems faced by the people due to disruption in road communication. They exclaimed, “Our local MLA has neither visited the area nor taken stock of the people’s problem during the disastrous situation”. Officials of PWD said that the department has no fund to take immediate measures for restoration of rural roads. Lion’s share of the fund meant for road construction is allotted to Rural Work Department, which has no concern over maintenance of the road after construction. The officials feel that the local MLA should manage some funds to tackle the situation as he being and elected leader, has the responsibility to look into the problems of the people.

Govt hikes diesel price by  Rs. 5, BJP calls it a 'cruel joke'

New Delhi, Sept 13: Biting the bullet, the government on Thursday night raised the diesel price by a steep  Rs. 5 per litre and capped the number of subsidised cooking gas cylinder to six per household a year, decisions that will rake in an additional  Rs. 20,300 crore to the oil companies.

The government, however, left untouched the price of petrol and kerosene.

Faced with the task of bringing down the ballooning oil subsidy, the government for the first time introduced a cap on supply of LPG cylinders of 14.2 kg that will make the consumers pay market price for cylinders beyond six.

The tough decisions, which came under immediate attack from allies like Trinamool Congress and Samajwadi Party and opposition alike, were taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. It will come into effect from midnight.

The government, which has been facing criticism of policy paralysis, had last hiked the price of diesel by  Rs. 3 a litre in June last year.

The revised retail selling price of diesel in Delhi will be  Rs. 47 a litre, while branded diesel will be sold at the market rate.

For the remaining part of the current financial year, the number of subsidised LPG cylinder to a consumer will be three cylinders.

A government release said that any number of LPG cylinders will be available at the market rate over the capped number of six. While the price of subsidised cylinder will continue to be  Rs. 399 per cylinder in Delhi, the market rate will be notified by oil firms on monthly basis.

Out of the  Rs. 5 increase,  Rs. 1.50 is on account of increase in excise duty and the balance hike will reduce the under-recoveries of the Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) by about  Rs. 15,000 crore in the remaining part of the current financial year.

But even after Thursday's hike the under recoveries on account of diesel sale in the current year is estimated to be above  Rs. 1.03 lakh crore, the release said.

Describing the hike in diesel prices as a cruel joke and 'mortal blow' on the common man and farmers, BJP on Thursday accused the government of conspiring with petrol 'mafia' and said it will not allow the hike and take to the streets instead.

"This is a cruel joke on the common man in the country. It has hit farmers hard during the peak paddy sowing season. We will not allow this hike. We will not allow this government to loot the common man like this," BJP vice president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said.

"The way this government is increasing prices of petrol, diesel and LPG despite a reduction in international crude prices, it is a clear-cut case of a conspiracy with the petroleum mafia," Naqvi said.

BJP leader Yashwant Sinha said the hike will have a cascading effect on prices and will contribute further to inflation.

"It is a mortal blow of  Rs. 5 increase in diesel price and will cause hardship. Had it been raised in small amounts it would not have been that objectionable or difficult. Diesel increase will have a cascading effect on the economy as a whole. Prices are already not under control, so this is going to contribute to overall inflation and create mayhem in the economy," Sinha said. PTI

A Times paying for reflecting true picture of state

Dear Editor,

A very strong linkage with political heavy weights and cops with some miscreant cannot be ruled out for repeated attack on Arunachal Times office and staffs. If not, why none of the attackers are arrested yet and put behind bars. Why another incident took place in the AT premises with its staffs? Why should the authority withdraw security personnel from AT?

When the CCTV coverage of the miscreant is produced before the police officers and published in the daily, there should some one who can identify him. I doubt, the shooter of Tongam Rina should be the attackers of the AT staffs. The Arunachal Times Daily is really paying for voicing the voice of the poor and reflecting the true picture of the state. I extend my solidarity and support to AT.

Good initiatives

Dear Editor,

Arunachal Pradesh Coaches Association (APCA) welcomes the initiative taken by  state Chief Minister Nabam Tuki to bring English Football Club Reading FC to hunt football talents in Arunachal Pradesh.

This would begin a new era for football in Arunachal Pradesh, and credit must be given to Chief Minister who convinced personally Club officials about the immense raw talents available in the youth of the state and their passion for their game (Football).

Therefore, Arunachal Pradesh Coaches Association also appeals the govt. of Arunachal Pradesh to create more numbers of post for coach in every district, so as to tap our every hidden talent in youths of the state.

Yours’

Jill Gyamar,

President, APCA

Take some needful actions

Dear Editor,

I want to draw the attention of all the departments of Arunachal Pradesh towards the vehicles lying idle  and  rusting in the most of the govt. office premises. If you visit any Govt. office, you can see one or two cars/jeeps lying idle and rusting (under repair !) for years together. Why such vehicles are allowed to rust?  Is it not wasting  of revenue collected from citizens ? It is high time the Govt should order all the offices to take note of all the vehicles lying idle and do something (either repair or sell it).

Yours’

Rika Karry

We hope for quick solution

Dear Editor,

Already 50 plus days passed from that ill-fated day of 15th July when one of our dedicated and beloved journalist 'Tongam Rina' was brutally and cowardly shot at by some unknown unwanted Gundas. But still no breakthrough reached, even though our so called 'Pro-People' Government stands committed to put the criminals behind iron-bar.

Everyday, we the dukhi-dukhi people of this khushi-khushi land, with some expectation sees the daily local newspaper and other links to find a glimpse of some concrete positive action in the ground level, but what we find is only the extended number of days of failure and cluelessness.

So, now our Government has decided to hand-over the case to the C.B.I, we hope everything of it will be solved in quick time. Otherwise, we again merely be on unending 'wait and watch', just counting the days passed as we started from the day-one.

Yours’

Mortality rates fall

An annual report by the UN Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN-IGME) shows that in 2011, an estimated 6.9 million children died before their fifth birthday, compared to around 12 million in 1990. Rates of child mortality have fallen in all regions of the world in the last two decades – down by at least 50% in eastern Asia, northern Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, south-eastern Asia and western Asia.

And progress is accelerating: between 2000 and 2011, the annual rate of reduction in the global under-five mortality rate jumped to 3.2%, up from 1.8% in 1990-2000. Sub-Saharan Africa, the region with the greatest challenge in child survival, has doubled its rate of reduction, from 1.5% per year in 1990-2010 to 3.1% in 2000-2011.

An estimated 19 000 children died every day in 2011, and 40% in the first month of life, most from preventable causes. The gains in child survival, although significant, are still insufficient to achieve Millennium Development Goal 4 of reducing the global under-five mortality rate by two-thirds between 1990 and 2015. Only six of the world’s 10 regions are on track to reach the target. Proven solutions need to be expanded to accelerate progress on child survival faster and farther.

The UN-IGME 2012 report calls for systematic action to reduce neonatal mortality as the proportion of under-five deaths during the neonatal period is rising in every region and almost all countries. Highly cost-effective interventions are feasible even at the community level. Accelerating the reduction in under-five mortality is possible by expanding preventative and curative interventions that target the main causes of post-neonatal deaths and the most vulnerable children.
